In Conversation with Selvedge

I was delighted to be interviewed by Selvedge magazine about my journey as a textile artist, my love of travel and the inspiration I find in the natural world.

Travel has always been an important part of my life and creative journey. I love discovering new places, meeting people, exploring different cultures and learning about their traditional textile techniques. My travels have opened my eyes to the extraordinary ways people around the world work with natural materials, colour and plant dyes, and have continually inspired my own practice.

A particularly formative experience was discovering traditional artisan techniques in India, which deepened my fascination with natural dyeing and the relationship between plants and textiles. Wherever I travel, I find myself drawn to the local flora, collecting leaves and imagining the patterns and colours they might leave on fabric.

Through botanical printing, I bring together my love of textiles, nature and exploration, creating one-of-a-kind silk and Merino wool pieces. I never quite know what will emerge when I unwrap a bundle of leaves and fabric, and that sense of discovery is what I love most about the process.

For me, travel and making are inseparable. Both are about curiosity, observation and being open to the unexpected. Wherever I go, nature offers something new to discover — and often, a leaf or two to bring home.

As I often say, home is where the leaves are.
